Summer Time Grilling

Nothing is like grilling outside on a beautiful summer day. However, grill fires on residential property result in an estimated average of 10 deaths, 100 injuries and $37 million in property loss each year.

Here are some more statistics:

*Almost half of grill fires occur between 5 and 8p.m.

*56% of fires start on patios, balconies and porches

*57 % of grill fires occur during the months of May, June, July, and August.

Here are some Safety Tips for Outdoor Grilling:

Never leave a lit grill unattended.

Do not grill on a covered patio, balcony, or in a garage, even with the doors open. Gas can still build up, and is impossible to detect.

Never store a grill or propane cylinder indoors.

Always transport gas containers in an upright position.

Always keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible spot.

Keep a phone nearby to call for help in case of an emergency.

Exercise caution when lighting the grill. Refer to the owner’s manual. If the grill does not light immediately, turn the gas off and wait a few minutes before trying again.

Never store or use flammable liquids, like gasoline, near the grill.

Make sure to have a designated safe zone with a radius of at least 10 feet around the grill. Keep children and other outdoor activities out of this zone.
